The best time to visit Munnar is between arrival of winter October to May, when the rains are not a frequent overflow. Don?t visit during the monsoon months that fall between June and September as you are guaranteed of getting thoroughly wet. Keep an umbrella handy all through the year though.

It is recommended to take along a good number of woolens if visiting Munnar especially during the winter season. Multiple layers of clothing also helps. In the summers, a light sweater would be enough to keep away the evening chill however. Lots of woolen shops can also be found in the central town area.

The weather in Munnar is pleasant most of the year. Summers (April-June) are mild, while winters (November-February) are cool. It experiences heavy southwestern monsoon rains in June-August.

Sree Krishna Temple
This temple of Munnar is dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is located at Peermade, 42 km from Kurnili. The annual festival here is celebrated for ten days. It starts with the hoisting of the temple flag (Kodiyettam). The last two evenings of the festival are marked by lively performances of Ottanthullal and Kavadiyattam. On the last night, the 'Thidampu' is taken out for the Arattu' i, e, holy bath. It is a colourful procession with the Thidampu. It is ceremoniously carried on a caparisoned elephant along with the temple music, 'Panchavadyam', which indicates the conclusion of the festival.

Sree Dharmasastha Temple
This temple of Munnar is dedicated to Lord Dharmasastha. The deity is Ayyappa, son of Shiva and Vishnu in the female form of Mohini. The annual one day colourful festival is celebrated with lots of pomp and gaiety. During this festival, 'Ammankudam' and 'Thalappow', 'Garudanvaravu', the folk rituals are performed, which represent the celestial bird, Garuda.

Sree Murugan Kovil
This temple is dedicated to Lord Subramanya. This deity is also known as Sree Muruga, son of Lord Siva. Here, 'Thrikkarthika Utsavam' festival is celebrated with lots of fun.

Sree Ayyappa Temple
This temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. It is situated at Anachal 15 km from Munnar. The six day annual festival of the temple starts with the ceremonial hoisting of the temple flag (Kodiyettam).

Santhigiri Sree Maheswari Temple
This temple of Munnar is dedicated to Lord Siva. It is situated at Santhigiri at the centre of Adimali town. Every year, a five day festival is celebrated in this temple. The last day of Shivaratri is considered to be the most auspicious for worship.

Sree Parthasarathy Temple
This temple is situated at Mundakkayam and 65 km from Thekkady. It is dedicated to Lord Parthasarathy. The six-day annual festival of the temple begins with the ceremonial hoisting of the temple flag (Kodiyettam).

Sree Krishnaswamy Temple
This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is located at the heart of Thodupuzha town. Every year, a ten day festival is celebrated in this temple. 'Kathakali' performances are also held on 5th and 6th days of the festival.

Winters

Attukal Pongala : (February) This festival, being the only one of its kind in the world, involves a gathering of women who cook a special pudding that is offered to the goddess at the Attukal temple. The temple's chief priest will sprinkle the offerings with holy water and this is followed by a showering of flowers.

Payippad Jelotsavam : (August/September) This festival is a religious commemoration of the Prathista ceremony of the Subramanya temple of Haripad. It lasts three days, starting on the day of the Onam festival. The first two days are marked by snake boat processions, with the third being the day of the competitive boat race.

Thrissur Pooram Festival (of May/June): The another most popular of Munnar festival is the Thrissur Pooram Festival, which takes place in the month of May/June. It is a massive show with about thirty caparisoned elephants decorated with gold knick-knacks.

Onam Festivals : Onam in August September every year is the most popularly celebrated festival , This festival lasts for ten days and involves singing dancing, festing and religious ceremonies. This harvest festival is celebrated to welcome the legendary king Mahabali. Intricate floral decorations are made on the courtyard to welcome this king on his visit to his beloved subjects. The most exciting feature of the festival however, is the snake boat races held at several places on the palm-fringed lagoons.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race : Nehru Trophy Boat Race is one of those events which the people of Kerala look forward to with excitement. Pavilions are set up for the spectators on the banks and in the middle of Punnamada Lake the venue of the race. This boat race takes its name from India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who inaugurated in 1952. There are separate races for women too. The race begins with a colorful pageant of floats performing arts and decorated boats and goes on late into the evening.

If you are familiar with Idukki District of Kerala, the town of Munnar is found within the district,which is also situated south of India. To get a closer look, Munnar is in the southern Western Ghats wherein you can check the wide jungle, which has a cold weather throughout the year. Munnar is known to be the summer capital of the British Government of South India. The land area is above sea level at a range of 1600m or 5400 ft. The town is joined with three rivers namely the Madupetti, Nallathanni and Periayaru. But Munnar in Malayalam as well as Tamil represents three rivers.
You can also check within the region, the blue flower called Neelakurinji where the flowers only bloom once every twelve years. As from the record, it once blooms last December 2006. The highest peak of South India, Anamudi, was also found in Munnar and it stands 2695m. Most people hanging around and consider it as hill station due to vast tea plantations and holiday amenities implanted within the vicinity.
Munnar was greatly influenced by the custom and traditions from Kerala and Tamilnadu. Most of the people living in Munnar are immigrants from Tamil. The tea plantation started even during the time of the British Empire when it ruled over India. It was that time then that people learn to cultivate the land to plant tea, as they were hired as laborers. Originally, Munnar was inhabited mostly with Tamilians and less of Malayalis.
The bungalows built within the Munnar area were for the used of British officers. They prefer this place because of the cold weather and even consider it as their hill station. Only two education institutes were established as well as few accessible hospitals.
Some region in Munnar can be distinguished through height range, some obtain 1,600 meters and some have 1,800 meters above sea level. Flora and Fauna

Most native flora and fauna of Munnar has disappeared due to severe habitat fragmentation by plantations and resorts. However, most of the species survive in several protected areas nearby, including the new Kurinjimala Sanctuary to the east, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Manjampatti Valley in Amaravati reserve forest of Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary to the north east, Eravikulam National Park and Anamudi Shola National Park to the north, Pampadum Shola National Park to the south and the proposed Palani Hills National Park to the east. These protected areas are especially known for several threatened and endemic species including Nilgiri Thar, Grizzled Giant Squirrel, Nilgiri Wood-pigeon, Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, and Neelakurinji.

Singing birds in the air and beautiful creeks around the hills will make you want to wander through the mist covered roads in search of something that you have always missed in your life outside Munnar.

The tropical rainy forests of Kerala contain an abundance of rare ethnic flora and fauna. Though the facilities for viewing them at a safe distance are limited, it is indeed an experience to be treasured to watch elephants, tigers, etc. in their natural habitat.

Anamudi Peak inside Eravikulam National Park is the highest peak (2695 m) in peninsular India. It towers over the sanctuary in majestic pride. The hill is abundant in all kinds of rare flora and fauna. It is best know for the endangered Nilgiri tahr (hemitragus hylocrious) although it does harbour a number of other equally interesting denizens? such as Atlas moth (the largest of its kind in the world), Nilgiri langurs, lion-tailed macaques, leopards and tigers.

Chinnar
At the midst of Tamilnadu and Kerala state situated the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is just 61km away ahead of Munnar upon your way to Coimbatore. On 1984, Chinnar was proclaimed as an Indhra Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary that is 90.4 sq-km wide. The rocky terrain gives more perfect viewing scenes of the sanctuary. There are different forest types, which composed the forestry within the sanctuary such as like scrub, dry, deciduous high forests and wet grasslands. Some of the instinct species can be spotted in the sanctuary too. You can check the Star Tortoise, Giant Grizzled Squirrel, Guar and Bison Herd. Aside from that, those gigantic size animals are also available like the elephant, sambar deer, and spotted deer hanuman monkeys. But if you think to stay for couple of days, they got guesthouse and tree house ready for your comfort. Every single animal can be monitored on the watchtower from the sanctuary.

Eravikulam National Park

One of the best wildlife treasuries in Kerala is found at Eravikulam. It is located at mere 16 km from Munnar which is an outstanding location. This will definitely give a memorable experience to any outdoor lovers. This is a combination of grassland and shola forests which is just about 97 Km across Rajamalai Hills. The Atlas moth is a unique citizen of this park. The moths are one of the highest inhabitants in the whole universe but a rare species within the park. You can also find distinct species of fauna which can be Nilgiri Langur, the lion-tailed macaque, leopards, tigers, etc. inside the park.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary or the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (after India's most famous ornithologist, who was instrumental in its establishment) is situated near Kothamangalam and is 80 km from Munnar. The area of 25 sq. km has been the size of the place of Thattekad. They live and multiply of dense forest of rosewood, teak and mahogany on that place. To know this is not a reason to worry for this land has an excellent selection of avifauna; this is to make sure that viewers will come and come for more.

The more well-known one are crimson-throated barbets, rose-billed rollers, sunbirds, shrikes, Malabar grey hornbills, Malayan night herons, rusty-tailed flycatchers, Ceylon frogmouths and parakeets. There are more than 270 Thattekad's local species. Not only that since there also more than 200 species of butterflies and a few mammals— including leopards and bears.

Madupetty Dam

Madupetty Dam has 1700 meters above sea level, which can be found 12km away from Munnar on your way to Top Station. The place is surrounded with trees and plants plus the Indo-Swiss Project, which gives beautiful scenery to every visitor of the place. You can see along the Eucalyptus tree, elephants that have the freedom roaming around the tree. The lake has 8 kms wide and people can do boating over the place as permitted by the District Tourism Promotion Council of Indukki District. You can sail using a speedboat, rover boat or slow boat. Echo Point

Gundala Lake

Marayoor

Just within the border of Munnar, Marayoor can be found. It is only 42 km from Munnar upon going to Chinnar. This place is rich with tribal traits and sandalwood forests. Before reaching Marayoor, you can meet several plantations like cardamom plantation, coffee and orange grove plantation. One of the highest qualities produced on sandalwood is available here. Sandalwood covers for several kilometers in area while Sandalwood is processed at Sandalwood Depot. Within the forest, you can enjoy the Children's Park as well as Deer Park. Greater percentage of Sandalwood and bamboo covered the Marayoor forest. If you are also into cave exploration, you can check the Muniyara Cave. Luckom falls

Luckom Waterfalls can be enjoyed within the area of Vagavurrai Estate, which is just 25 km travel from Munnar to the Marayoor. Blossom Park

Munnar History
'Munnar' defines as the three rivers. This is the definition in Malayalam and in Tamil. It is the site where the three mountain streams combined. The first person to visit it is the famous Duke of Wellington.
It was founded by the British planters but only Tamilians continue to develop in cultivating tea plants while few of Malayalis already occupied that area. It has been called as the summer capital of the British in southern India.
Sooner, Malayalis workers were increasing to work in plantations and bungalows. They built it for estate managers of British origin. With these hard works, they fill the high ranks. Their work still last and can still be used as good as new. Their local people communicate with each other through Malayalam, which is the official language of Kerala and Tamil is considered second language due to numerous Tamilians citizens living here.
Munnar has its own story to tell that happened more than a thousand years ago. That is actually can be dated back to Stone Age civilization. It started during the 10th century. The leader of the villages of Anchanad, Kannan Thevar, seized lands to north of the high ranges which is owned by the local Rajah of Poojar. This event all happened in 19th century.
The Parvathi which is 50 acres of land of Sevenmully estate today was the witness of the first tea seedling planted by A.H. Sharp which was documented by the events of the past.
The Kannan Devan (Kannan Thevar) Concession Land was a thick jungle before J D Munro's arrival to Munnar. He is a British lawyer and a tea planter who rented about 600 sq. km of land around Minnar from the Poonjar chief who is an assistant of the Maharaja of Travancore. After such, he immediately cleans the forest for the Tea plantations.
There came a time that the Munro's land was passed from one to another. At first, Messrs Finlay Muir & Company bought it in 1895 and sold it to Tate-Finlay Ltd. in 1976. During the year 1983 sold it and finally the company became famous as Tate Tea Ltd., which is the largest incorporated tea in the universe.
